MIT Science Policy Review is a student-run journal dedicated to bridging the gap between scientific research and policy-making. By providing in-depth analysis and expert insights, the platform serves as a critical resource for researchers, policymakers, and the public, fostering informed decision-making on global challenges. As the team transitioned to PubPub—a collaborative publishing platform—they sought to enhance accessibility, readability, and brand coherence while working within the platform’s technical constraints.

Elevating knowledge through thoughtful design within boundaries

With PubPub’s functionality-driven structure prioritizing content over aesthetics, the design interventions focused on refining and elevating the existing framework. The logo was subtly enhanced with functional variations, ensuring adaptability across diverse applications, from light and dark backgrounds to digital and print materials. By maintaining brand consistency while allowing for flexibility, these refinements strengthened MIT Science Policy Review’s identity within a structured, academic space. As often seen in design, limitations can drive creativity—working within PubPub’s constraints encouraged strategic decisions that balanced form and function.

To improve the platform’s usability, content was methodically organized into distinct sections, each clearly delineated to guide the reader’s journey. A refined typographic hierarchy brought clarity to dense information, making complex policy discussions more digestible. Interactive buttons and responsive elements were introduced to encourage engagement, ensuring that key insights remained both accessible and visually compelling without disrupting the platform’s built-in structure.
